I'm a Florida girl, born & raised, a big fan of my home state!
I graduated from the Univ of FL with a Masters in Communication Sciences & Disorders. I was a speech-language pathologist for the public schools for 20 years.
But ever since I could make a fist, I've been wielding art supplies. And I'm not afraid to use them.
I carved the alphabet into great grandma's desk with a car key. I dragged toys across the wall to create colored lines. I drew cartoons on Dad's leather seats, notoriously shredded a spendy book for a collage & painted Mom's bedspread with red nail polish.
Then I started kindergarten.
Although I had some formal training in secondary school & more recently in adult community classes, I am primarily self taught.
My work is colored by the saturated, vibrant culture, language & palette of South Florida.
My art is inspired by the patterns & shapes of nature. The repetitiousness is soothing. Everything outside is predictably labile, like well-orchestrated chaos.
And, can't we all relate to that?
For 20 years, I worked in special ed, using my artistic skills in the public schools to create therapy materials & visual aids for kids with special needs.
Because I'm a word nerd, I'm still a member of several speech + language associations. I carry an active Florida SLP license.
My artwork has been featured in several different galleries, sales & shows in the community. I design for local newsletters & periodicals.
Most recently, I participated in Artigras' Emerging Artist Program, designed to help bring up local talent, providing emerging artists with a series of workshops, and a kick-off party, to get them ready for Artigras, a 2-day long Annual Fine Art Festival in South Florida.
I create & sell original fiber art, photography, watercolors & wearables.
I create art to make the world a little prettier, to showcase the beauty of natural Florida, to raise awareness about educational & environmental issues in my home state & to relax.
My goal as an artist is to deeply integrate the arts with other allied health disciplines & therapies, ultimately making these services more accessible & affordable to people with disabilities, economic disadvantages, mental illness, or substance abuse disorders.
